Rainforest gaps on the Tomaree Peninsula are easy to overlook. A track may pass from open scribbly gum woodland into a darker gully, where the air feels cooler, leaf litter stays damp and small ferns appear beneath palms, vines and broad-leaved trees. These openings are often temporary, created by a fallen branch, storm damage or the gradual decay of an old tree.

The rough maidenhair fern, Adiantum hispidulum, has a more textured appearance than the delicate maidenhair forms and may withstand brighter conditions when moisture is available. Look for the division of the frond and the placement of the sori along leaflet margins. Avoid relying on one photograph alone, because young fronds and drought-stressed plants can look quite different from mature specimens.
Ground ferns in the Blechnum group are also important in wet forest openings. Blechnum cartilagineum, commonly called the graham’s sword fern, forms clumps of long, divided fronds and can occur in damp gullies and rainforest margins. Its appearance changes with age and light, so a close image of the frond underside is often needed for confident identification.
Ferns on trunks and rocks
Not every rainforest fern grows from the ground. The bird’s nest fern, Asplenium australasicum, forms a bold rosette of strap-like fronds. It can grow as an epiphyte in forks of trees or as a lithophyte on sheltered rocks, collecting leaf litter and water in its central “nest”. Mature plants are especially useful indicators of a stable, humid microhabitat.
The kangaroo fern, Microsorum pustulatum, and related Microsorum species may spread across trunks, rocks or soil. Their fronds can be variable, sometimes deeply lobed and sometimes much less divided. Tiny round sori on the underside are a useful feature, but they are best viewed with a hand lens or a clear photograph rather than by removing a frond.
Epiphytic ferns are particularly vulnerable to careless collecting. A plant attached to a fallen branch may still be alive, while a specimen high in a tree may have taken many seasons to establish. In a public reserve or national park, leave plants in place and record their position, host tree and surrounding vegetation. This creates a better botanical record than taking a piece home.

New growth can be misleading. Many ferns unfurl as curled fiddleheads, often with a bronze or reddish flush.
